This hotkey changes the language of the language bar. This can be an interesting way to keep switching languages in the language bar.<\/p>\n<p>To test this, enter your favorite text editor, then press the key\u00a0<em>alt\u00a0<\/em>and then press the key\u00a0<em>shift<\/em>. Note that the capital letters in the language bar change each time you do this.<\/p>\n<p>An important observation is that the key\u00a0<em>alt\u00a0<\/em>which should be used to change the language of the language bar, is the key\u00a0<em>alt\u00a0<\/em>on the left side of the keyboard. If you use the key\u00a0<em>alt\u00a0<\/em>on the right side, Windows IME will not change the language of the language bar.<\/p>\n<h3>Setting a Hotkey for the Desired Language<\/h3>\n<p>Many Japanese learners prefer to use a hotkey to jump right into the language they want. To do this, you will need to customize your Windows IME and determine a key, or set of keys, to perform this operation.<\/p>\n<p>To configure a hotkey, right-click on the language bar and select the option\u00a0<em>settings<\/em>. At this point, the window will open\u00a0<em>Text services and input languages<\/em>\u00a0of Windows IMME.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1544 size-full\" title=\"windows ime text and language services\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/comoaprenderjapones.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/windows-ime-servicos-de-texto-e-idiomas.gif?resize=404%2C485&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"windows ime text and language services\" width=\"404\" height=\"485\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note that at the bottom of the window there is an item called\u00a0<em>preferences<\/em>. If you click the button\u00a0<em>language bar<\/em>, another window called\u00a0<em>Language Bar Settings<\/em>, where you can customize your language bar in a very interesting way.<\/p>\n<p>In this window there are options to display the language bar on the desktop, add transparency, show additional icons (as we did in the previous article) and show the captions of the buttons in the language bar.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1545 size-full\" title=\"windows ime settings language bar\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/comoaprenderjapones.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/windows-ime-configuracoes-barra-de-idiomas.gif?resize=366%2C203&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"windows ime settings language bar\" width=\"366\" height=\"203\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, what we are going to do is click on the\u00a0<em>key settings<\/em>, where we will be able to determine a shortcut for each language in the language bar. This will open the window\u00a0<em>Advanced key settings<\/em>, as shown in the figure below.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1547 size-full\" title=\"windows ime key settings\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/comoaprenderjapones.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/windows-ime-configuracoes-de-tecla.gif?resize=414%2C297&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"windows ime key settings\" width=\"414\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Notice that in the item\u00a0<em>Access keys for input languages<\/em>\u00a0there are only key sequences for the option\u00a0<em>Switch between input languages<\/em>. these are the keys\u00a0<em>alt+shift<\/em>\u00a0that we learned in the previous topic.<\/p>\n<p>What we are going to do now is add a shortcut so that we can change the language of the language bar directly to Japanese, without having to go through other languages.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, select the option\u00a0<em>Switch to Japanese \u2013 Japan \u2013 input system<\/em>\u2026, and then click the button\u00a0<em>Change key sequence<\/em>. With this, a window will open where we can indicate our shortcut keys for the Japanese language of our language bar.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, I usually leave the Japanese language with the keys\u00a0<em>Ctrl+shift+1<\/em>. For that, just leave the window\u00a0<em>Change key sequence<\/em>\u00a0as shown in the image below. And click the OK button.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1546 size-full\" title=\"windows ime change key sequence\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/comoaprenderjapones.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/windows-ime-alterar-sequencia-de-teclas.gif?resize=410%2C159&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"windows ime change key sequence\" width=\"410\" height=\"159\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you don&#039;t want to use any shortcut keys for a specific language in the language bar, just uncheck the option\u00a0<em>Activate key sequence<\/em>\u00a0in the window above and click the OK button. This will disable any previously configured shortcuts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to using the keys\u00a0<em>ctrl+shift+1<\/em>\u00a0as a shortcut for the japanese language, i also usually leave the telcas\u00a0<em>ctrl+shift+0<\/em>\u00a0as a shortcut for the Portuguese language.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, simply select the item\u00a0<em>switch to portuguese<\/em>\u2026 from the window\u00a0<em>Advanced key settings<\/em>, click the button\u00a0<em>Change key sequence<\/em>\u00a0and mark the options as shown in the figure below.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1548 size-full\" title=\"windows ime keys language portuguese\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/comoaprenderjapones.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/windows-ime-teclas-idioma-portugues.gif?resize=410%2C159&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"windows ime keys language portuguese\" width=\"410\" height=\"159\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After that, just exit by clicking the Ok button from all windows.<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#039;s test the settings we&#039;ve made. Open your favorite text editor, and press the keys\u00a0<em>ctrl+shift+1<\/em>. Note that the language bar has directly changed to the Japanese language. If we press the keys\u00a0<em>ctrl+shift+0<\/em>\u00a0now the language of the language bar should go directly back to portuguese.<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Writing in Japanese on PC productively<\/h2>\n<p>From now on, the hotkeys that we are going to mention in this article will only work with the Japanese language selected in the language bar. So, make sure you have your text editor open and the Japanese language selected.<\/p>\n<h3>Switching between hiragana, katakana and romaji<\/h3>\n<p>To switch between these three character input modes, you can simply use the shortcut keys below, following the guidelines shown in the table.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"2\" cellpadding=\"2\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Hotkeys<\/th>\n<th>guidelines<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Ctrl + CapsLock<\/td>\n<td>Changes the current character input mode to hiragana.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr bgcolor=\"#f2f2f2\">\n<td>Alt + CapsLock<\/td>\n<td>Changes the current character input mode to katakana.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Alt + (key before number 1, usually \u201c or &#039;)<\/td>\n<td>Switches between current and Alphanumeric (romaji) character input mode.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Converting letters between hiragana, katakana and romaji<\/h3>\n<p>Another way to accomplish this swapping of characters between hiragana, katakana and romaji is to use Japanese letter conversion.<\/p>\n<p>In Japanese letter conversion, you just need to type the words you want. These words can be in hiragana, katakana or romaji. Then just use the hotkeys\u00a0<em>ctrl+u<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>F6<\/em>\u00a0(Convert letters to hiragana),\u00a0<em>ctrl+i<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>F7<\/em>\u00a0(converts lyrics to katakana) and\u00a0<em>ctrl+p<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>F9<\/em>\u00a0(convert letters to romaji or alphanumeric).<\/p>\n<p>To test these hotkeys, let&#039;s type the word\u00a0<em>hiragana<\/em>, using the Japanese language hiragana character input mode without pressing the key\u00a0<em>enter<\/em>. With that, you should be seeing the word\u00a0<acronym title=\"hiragana\">\u3072\u3089\u304c\u306a<\/acronym>\u00a0with a special underline.<\/p>\n<p>Now try pressing the keys\u00a0<em>ctrl+i<\/em>\u00a0and then\u00a0<em>ctrl+u<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>ctrl+p<\/em>\u00a0without pressing the key\u00a0<em>enter<\/em>. Note that Windows IME has replaced the typed letters with the same letters in katakana, hiragana and romaji.<\/p>\n<p>Now press the keys\u00a0<em>F6<\/em>, later\u00a0<em>F9\u00a0<\/em>and then\u00a0<em>F7<\/em>. Windows IME changed the letters to hiragana, romaji and katakana. It was not?<\/p>\n<p>That way, you can type a word in any character input mode, and as long as it&#039;s underlined, you can convert to hiragana, katakana, or romaji without having to switch between character input modes. To confirm the conversion, just press the key\u00a0<em>enter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I believe character conversion is an interesting alternative to writing Japanese on PC using Japanese alphabets and romaji quickly.<\/p>\n<h3>Explore right mouse button<\/h3>\n<p>The nice thing about Windows IME is that as long as you have the Japanese language active in the language bar, many things can change in the programs you are using, especially if that program is MS Word.<\/p>\n<p>Suppose you typed a word in hiragana, used the spacebar and turned the syllables into kanji. Then pressed the key\u00a0<em>enter\u00a0<\/em>and only later did he realize that he had chosen the wrong Japanese symbols. What do you do now?<\/p>\n<p>Before I erased the word typed, wrote it all over again in hiragana and then used the spacebar to turn everything into kanji. A lot of work isn&#039;t it?<\/p>\n<p>In MS Word you can use the right mouse button to solve this problem. When you right-click on a word (be it in romaji, hiragana, katakana or kanji), a menu with character conversion options appears at the top of it.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1549 size-full\" title=\"windows ime right click\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/comoaprenderjapones.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/windows-ime-botao-direito.gif?resize=368%2C445&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"windows ime right click\" width=\"368\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can select one of the displayed options or click on the\u00a0<em>Most\u2026.<\/em>\u00a0clicking the button\u00a0<em>Most\u2026<\/em>, the selected word goes back to edit mode (with that special underline) and a kanji selection box, making it possible to make any changes to the word, including using the shortcut keys we learned in this article.<\/p>\n<p>Making changes this way is much simpler than erasing and rewriting everything again.
