It can be used to indicate existence and location, direction of an action, time span and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose of this article is not to detail all particle functions.&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>, as this would become very long and tiring. Therefore, I will emphasize the most common functions of this&nbsp;<a title=\"Japanese particles\" href=\"https:\/\/comoaprenderjapones.net\/en\/particles-in-japanese\/\">japanese particle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indicating existence or location<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;it can be used to indicate the existence or location of something or someone. In sentences like this, the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;usually precedes the verb, indicating where the subject of the sentence is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"tanaka-sensei wa, ima gakkou ni irasshaimasu.\">\u7530\u4e2d\u5148\u751f\u306f\u3001\u4eca\u5b66\u6821<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u3044\u3089\u3063\u3057\u3083\u3044\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Professor Tanaka is now&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">at<\/span>&nbsp;school.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"kare wa nihon ni sundeimasen.\">\u5f7c\u306f\u65e5\u672c<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u4f4f\u3093\u3067\u3044\u307e\u305b\u3093\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>he is not living&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">at the<\/span>&nbsp;Japan.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I mentioned in the article about the&nbsp;<a title=\"When to use GA particle in Japanese\" href=\"https:\/\/comoaprenderjapones.net\/en\/when-to-use-the-particle-ga\/\">ga particle in japanese<\/a>, we can combine several Japanese particles in order to be more specific or add more information in a sentence. In many of these cases, the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;it has no translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"kare wa toukyou eki no chikaku ni sunde imasu.\">\u5f7c\u306f\u6771\u4eac\u99c5\u306e\u8fd1\u304f<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u4f4f\u3093\u3067\u3044\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>He is living\/living near Tokyo station.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"umi ni sakana ga imasu.\">\u6d77<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u9b5a\u304c\u3044\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>There are\/are fish(s) in the sea.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note that, unlike the&nbsp;<a title=\"the Japanese particle E\" href=\"https:\/\/comoaprenderjapones.net\/en\/the-japanese-particle-e\/\">particle&nbsp;<em>and<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;which is used in conjunction with action verbs, the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;it&#039;s usually used with more static verbs or else where the subject of the sentence doesn&#039;t change location because of the action performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"honda-san wa shinjuku no ginkou ni tsutomete imasu\">\u672c\u7530\u3055\u3093\u306f\u65b0\u5bbf\u306e\u9280\u884c<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u52e4\u3081\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Mr. Honda works (or is working)&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">at the<\/span>&nbsp;Shinjiku bank.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The NI particle and the time relation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;it can indicate a relationship of time, identifying what is happening in a certain place. It can indicate when something started, ended, or the time interval when something happened or is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"ginkou wa kuji ni hirakimasu.\">\u9280\u884c\u306f\u4e5d\u6642<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u958b\u304d\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>the bank opens&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">at<\/span>&nbsp;nine o&#039;clock.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"gakkou wa mainichi kuji ni hajimarimasu.\">\u5b66\u6821\u306f\u6bce\u65e5\u516b\u6642\u534a<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u59cb\u307e\u308a\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Every morning, school (or classes) starts.&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">at<\/span>&nbsp;half past eight.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"getsuyoubi ni burajiru he ikimasu.\">\u6708\u66dc\u65e5<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u30d6\u30e9\u30b8\u30eb\u3078\u884c\u304d\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I&#039;m going to Brazil&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">at<\/span>&nbsp;Monday.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike particles&nbsp;<em>kara<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>made<\/em>, which we&#039;ll mention in later articles, the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;usually uses tense adverbs rather than highlighting exactly the beginning and ending moment of the action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indicating the objective of an action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the biggest confusion point for students of Japanese, since the particle&nbsp;<em>and&nbsp;<\/em>sets out to perform the same function. In sentences like this, the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;can be exchanged for the particle&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;without altering the meaning of the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"watashi wa nihon ni ikitai.\">\u79c1\u306f\u65e5\u672c<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u884c\u304d\u305f\u3044\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"watashi wa nihon and ikitai.\">\u79c1\u306f\u65e5\u672c<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u3078<\/span>\u884c\u304d\u305f\u3044\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I wanna go&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">to<\/span>&nbsp;Japan.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"kanojo wa raigetsu burajiru ni ikimasu.\">\u5f7c\u5973\u306f\u6765\u6708\u30d6\u30e9\u30b8\u30eb<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u884c\u304d\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"kanojo wa raigetsu burajiru and ikimasu.\">\u5f7c\u5973\u306f\u6765\u6708\u30d6\u30e9\u30b8\u30eb<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u3078<\/span>\u884c\u304d\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>She goes&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">to<\/span>&nbsp;Brazil next month.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although this happens several times, the objective of an action does not always reflect the subject&#039;s displacement from one place to another. In my view, when there is no displacement of the subject, it makes no sense to change the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;by the particle&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"boku wa oniisan ni tegami o kaita.\">\u50d5\u306f\u304a\u5144\u3055\u3093<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u624b\u7d19\u3092\u66f8\u3044\u305f\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I wrote a letter&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">to<\/span>&nbsp;My oldest brother.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marking the indirect object of the sentence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;is often used to highlight the indirect object of a sentence. It usually appears after the indirect object, when the indirect object precedes a direct object, or between the indirect object and the verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"kaimono ni ikimasu.\">\u8cb7\u3044\u7269<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u884c\u304d\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I&#039;m going&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">at<\/span>&nbsp;shopping (shopping).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><acronym title=\"imouto wa watashi ni tanjoubi no purezento o kuremashita.\">\u59b9\u306f\u79c1<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u306b<\/span>\u8a95\u751f\u65e5\u306e\u30d7\u30ec\u30bc\u30f3\u30c8\u3092\u304f\u308c\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002<\/acronym><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My sister gave a birthday present&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">for<\/span>&nbsp;me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite having many functions, learn the basic uses of the particle&nbsp;<em>ni<\/em>&nbsp;it&#039;s not complicated.
